Electric Heated Blankets, what you should know.

The cold weather months have arrived which means many people will be bringing out their electric blankets for added warmth. What is better then snuggling up with a warm cozy blanket on a very cold night?

Yes, they are great for keeping warmth but it is very important to remember that they are electric. Always remember safety first when it comes to any type of electricity. Check out some of these tips below.

Do choose a blanket that confirms to the Underwriter Laboratories (UL) standards. It's also a good idea to go online and check reviews, do a search to make sure the blanket is not recalled.

Don't use electric blankets on toddlers, babies or anyone who can not control the heat settings themselves.


Do try to keep the heated blanket flat rather the balled up or folded so the heat does not become too intense.

Don't use the heated blanket all night unless its specifically rated for safe use overnight. Also do not forget that your blanket is plugged in. Remember to turn it off before you go to bed.

Do look for an electric blanket that has an automatic timer for shut off. This is very helpful for those who seem to be forgetful.

Don't run the cord between the mattress and box spring or carpet. This could be very dangerous as all the friction could damage the cord for the electric blanket and potentially cause a fire.

It is the winter season and it tends to become very cold . The colder winter weather increases the likelihood of heating related fires, fatalities and injuries. We want to share some simple tip that will help you and your loved ones stay safe all winter long. 

• Have your heating systems inspected by a qualified service professional at least once a year. This inspection should include lubrication and cleaning, replacing filters, a check of belts and thermostats and having vents cleared of obstructions.
• Make sure window air conditions do not allow cold air to sneak through or around sides, top and bottom, putting an extra strain on heating systems and adding cost for homeowners. Local hardware stores can provide covers and other easy, low-cost ways to keep that cold air out. 
• Caulking around windows and other openings can stop the cold air invasion. Caulking and a caulking gun from your local hardware stores and inexpensive and easy to use. A warmer home and lower utility bills can result. 
• Use products only for their intended purpose. Hair dryers are not intended to thaw frozen pipes, dry clothing or warm bedding. 
• When using a portable heater, keep flammable materials - bedding, clothing, draperies, rugs and furniture at least three feet away even if it has safety features such as cut-off switched or heating element guards. 
• If you use an electric blanket to keep warm on a cold night, follow the manufacturer's instructions and make sure you turn it off and unplug it when it's not in use. Never tuck an electric blanket in.

Holiday Electrical Tips

At Quality Electric safety is one of the foundations of everything we do. Our goal is for everyone to safely enjoy this wonderful holiday time year filled with celebrations, family and friends. Check out these tips to ensure  safe holiday season!

1. Install smoke detectors one every level of the home, and make sure at least one is located outside the sleeping area.
2. Use holiday lights that are approved by a nationally recognized testing organization.
3. If you decorate a real tree, water it everyday and prevent lights coming into contact with tree branches. 
4. If you choose an artificial tree be sure it is certified as fire resistant by looking for the UL label.
5. For outdoor decorating, use only lights and power strips that have been approved for outdoor use.
6. Before hanging your holiday lights, inspect them for frayed wires, broken sockets, or other signs of wear and tear; then test each light string. 
7. Keep electrical connections off the ground and make sure wiring is clear of downspouts railings and aluminium siding. 
8. Avoid running extension cords across long distances, under rugs or near doorways. Never use extension cords with space heaters. 
9. Turn off of unplug holiday lights when not in use. Never leave lights on unattached. Consider using a timer. 
10. Always keep a working fire extinguisher available.

Electrical New Years Resolutions

As we are getting ready to take on the new year and 2018 quickly comes to an end, we have some  great electrical suggestions so you can get your home in order and save a few extra bucks next year .

1. Check Smoke and CO Alarms. You should always make it your goal to check these alarms at least twice a year (preferably around daylight savings). This will ensure that you are protected from danger should an unfortunate event arise.

2. Have a whole house surge protector installed. Power surges often come without warning and they can wipe out your entire electrical system if you are not prepared. With a whole house surge protector it will be one less thing you will have to worry about each night.

3. Stop buying inexpensive chargers. We are sure you guys always here "you get what you pay for" and it is most definitely very true when it comes to electronic device chargers. It's totally worth spending those few extra dollars for original equipment. There are tons of counterfeit products out there that can damage your electronic devices or even start a fire.

4.  Swap out old light bulbs. It's finally time, you should swap out those old light bulbs for LEDs. Yes, they may cost more now, but you will save a ton on money in the long run since they have a long lifespan.

5. Cut back on overall energy use. Sit down with your family and come up with a plan to figure out how you can cut back on energy use. Constantly remind everyone to turn off the lights, and electrical devices when they are not in use.

Energy Vampires

Soon there will be ghosts, ghouls, goblins and more emerging the streets and inspire scares. But while they're out there seeking sustenance (in the form of candy bars), there is an actual terror which may be in your home already, leeching off your energy supply. Unlike the creatures associated with Halloween these "energy vampires" are all too real and all around you, running up your energy bill even when your not actively using them.

The average American household owns about 25 consumer electric devices (cell phone chargers, printers, computers, tv box etc), you can begin to see how these phantom loads can translate into a significant chunk of your electricity bill each month. You do not have to get rid of these devices there are very simple and convenient strategies that will help you drive a stake through these energy vampires.

• Unplug devices you don't use often: This probably would not work for your cable box, clock radio, but if you have an extra TV, an old desktop computer or a stereo you only use from time to time, you should consider unplugging them completely until the next time you need them,
• Use power strips: Power strips allow you to toggle the power flow on and off. This will allow you to control the power usage of clusters of devices so that they're not consuming electricity when you're not around. Using a light switch that turns power outlets on and off accomplishes the same end, if you have one in your home. 
• Curb idle time in devices such as computers and video game consoles. Simply setting your computer to sleep mode or saving a game and powering down instead of leaving it paused for a prolonged period can actually save more then $100 a year in many cases, 
• Making smart upgrades: When it comes to send your old devices to the graveyard you should consider replacing them with a more energy efficient product. They have lower standby consumption than your average device and generally uses less energy in all their functions. 

None of these strategies will eliminate your electricity bill entirely, but together these trick cna help you slay these energy vampires while saving money.

Fire Hazards in bedrooms

Did you know nearly 600 lives are lost to fires in the bedroom each year? In honor of national fire prevention week a few weeks back, here are some electrical safety hazards that are commonly found in bedrooms and what you can do to prevent a fire!

• Do you use an electric blanket to keep you warm during the cold fall and winter months? Make sure you replace every 10 years and check to make sure the cords, wires and temperature controls are not damaged. Be careful not to pinch any heating wires and remember to turn off the blanket off when you are not using it. 
• Have electrical appliances in your such as a computer, tv, or lamp? Be sure to turn them off before you fall asleep and never run extension cords that power your devices under carpets or rugs. 
• Never overload outlets. Follow all manufacturers instructions when plugging in an electronic device and use a surge protector when needed.
• Smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors should be installed in every bedroom in the house. Test the batteries monthly to make sure they are in working condition in case an emergency should strike.
